I have been spending quite a bit of time thinking about discipleship and the true picture of discipleship. Bible studies and classes are good things but when I really look at scripture and study Jesus’ model of discipleship there is one word that comes to my mind, “Investment”. Investment is the essence of discipleship. Investment and discipleship both communicate value and importance. “I see you as valuable. I believe that you are worth investing in, caring for and walking with.

Southside is located within walking distance to the hospitals. We have felt the calling to minister to the medical district for a long time. There's lots of other good stuff about the hospital ministry that Karen's going to write about for you in the days ahead.
Pastor Michael felt that the Lord laid this group of "invisible people" on his heart. A handful of Southsiders visit the local jail every week to fellowship and share their faith with men and women who need friendship and the blessings of the gospel. We also host large picnics during the summer for all ofthe officers, their families, and our church members. There is delicious food and fun activities and games for all ages. Everyone is welcome! In addition, our church gives "Officer Cooler Bags" each Christmas as presents to the officers.
Southside has a ministry each Sunday night to the children that live in Sparkman Homes. We have a faithful group that goes every Sunday night, but they need your help! They need substitute teachers to step in when the regular teachers cannot go. They are willing to train you. If you are interested in this ministry, contact Dana Watwood or the church office for more information.
Every Sunday evening we have an awesome opportunity to pour out the love of Jesus on a great group of people with special needs. We have wonderful times with crafts, music, Bible lessons, games, and fellowship- all while sharing the love of Christ! This class is to help us learn to live in the world as Jesus wants us to live and to bring light to the people who don’t know him.
Southside’s Sonshiners (our Senior Adult ministry) provides opportunities for study and fellowship for those 55+! Come join in our regular activities:
- Sonshiners meets one Tuesday each month at the church. Come enjoy fine food and great fellowship.
- Prayer Breakfast meets another Tuesday each month for a time of breakfast and prayer.
While sponsored by our Senior Adult ministry, all activities are open to everyone who wants to attend.
Every man who is a part of Southside Baptist Church is already a part of the “Men's Ministry”. We all play a part in ministry as church leaders, heads of households, husbands, fathers, teachers, ministers and much more. Our focus as a ministry to men at Southside is to encourage men to become “Game Changers”--to create opportunities for men to get off the bench and the pews and become bold disciples of Christ, willing to become more effective in their ministry to their families, their church and others outside of the church.
TLC Ministry provides various opportunities for the Ladies of Southside to come together and connect with each other, love each other, encourage each other, spur each other on to obedience, pray for each other. TLC ministry is available for all ladies with the hope that we will become unified.
