I liked this a lot, but if this had been the first in a series where Ned and Cecilia were going to remain a couple, more as a will-they-won’t-they vibe, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more. The main couple didn't really work for me and it felt a little rushed. It also didn’t read like a romance book to me - it read like a historical fantasy with a romantic side plot, and as a result I found it a little underwhelming overall. That said, I’m interested in the plot of the next book in the series, so I will be keeping an eye out for more, and it was a lot of fun. I’d recommend it if you want a fun Victorian, light fantasy novel with an enemies-to-lovers romance and a lot of action. En lire plus

This story is set in an alternate 1880s England where that bat-shit Banks family neighbor from Mary Poppins—the one who turned his house into an armed ship deck—must’ve started a new housing trend. For here you will encounter such things as flying battlehouses and vengeful lady pirates, a bookish, take-no-shit heroine, a hero that could give the Dread Pirate Roberts (aka Cary Elwes, ca. 1987) a run for his money, and a dastardly villain who can’t write a single decent poem. Best of all, there’s a liberal sprinkling of Bronteism that set my moor of a soul howling with gothic laughter. In case it wasn’t clear, let me reiterate: This is NOT your standard romance novel. It’s a side-splitting satire, facetious and flirtatious in prose, occasionally darkly humorous and always self-aware. It’s totally, wonderfully unlike anything else in the romance genre right now.The banter between Cecilia and Ned is so smart and zappy, I hardly noticed (until it was much too late to care) that the couple falls a tiny bit under the insta-love trope. Their verbal trades and pistol sparring tantalize like foreplay, and I love that they make each other laugh; it’s easy to see how they suit. Never mind that they just met or that one was hired to assassinate the other. There’s a restrained and straining seductiveness to the love story: a mere finger touch is enough to set the heat on high. Victorian romance indeed. En lire plus

I am sad that chapter 20 had to be thrown in because I love the style/humor/originality. Unfortunately it has no warning about how graphic that unnecessary chapter is. It’s “romance” but I would say “erotica” in only that chapter.Otherwise it’s so cute. Shame. En lire plus

I suspect that you have never read a book like this one. The book is set in Victorian England with paranormal elements. The premise is a society of very proper lady pirates who steal, lie, pillage, and take tea across England while piloting their fortified flying houses. It is clever, often humorous, sometimes absurdist, creative, romantic, and occasionally erotic. It is fun! The book is filled with violence, but it is a cartoon style of violence. Cecilia lives with her aunt and aspires to be admitted to full membership in the Wisteria Society. The Wisteria Society is filled with lady pirates who are great friends even though they are each completely untrustworthy. Cecilia is heartened when she is made the object of an assassination contract. Surely, she is about to be admitted to full membership in the Society. Finally, she has arrived! Trust me, this is not the Bourne Identity type of assassination order. Her assassin is either inept or not really trying. He also is the unbearably handsome romantic interest and a man of many roles and identities. Cecilia is the runaway daughter of the villain of this story and that drives much of the plot. Queen Victoria gets in on the action and that is also comical. The book is filled with literary references and little side bits that add to the amusement. The tone is similar to Jasper Fforde’s Eyre Affair with the little surprises and twists at every turn. But here we have added romance and sex. In fact, the explicit sex scene came as a bit of a surprise (along with the casual cocaine jokes). Some stories are realistic, some stories are tragic, some stories are entertaining, and some are all of that and more. This story is creative, clever, and entertaining with loads of clever word play. It won’t change the world or give you new insight into humanity, but it is fun. The premise might get old, but I will look forward to the next book about the Wisteria Society. En lire plus

The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels is SO clever and funny and just plain delightful. It's this awesome mash-up of genres--Historical Fantasy Romance--and it gave me Going Postal (Terry Pratchett) and Princess Bride vibes. The world-building and character development in this book are incredible. There are pirates and flying houses and attempted coups and lots of wonderful quips and banter not to mention a very swoony romance along with some surprising plot twists and turns. How could I not love a book that includes appearances by Queen Victoria and shout-outs to the Brontës?I highly recommend this book when you're next in the mood for something completely different and highly entertaining! I laughed my way through it and really wish someone would turn the book into a TV show or movie because the characters are a hoot! I cannot wait to read the second book in the series, The League of Gentlewomen Witches, when it's released next year. En lire plus
