Now a major French film Au revoir là-haut - Prix Goncourt-winning masterpiece by the writer who brought you Alex, Irène and Camille.October 1918: the war on the Western Front is all but over. Desperate for one last chance of promotion, the ambitious Lieutenant Henri d'Aulnay Pradelle sends two scouts over the top, and secretly shoots them in the back to incite his men to heroic action once more. And so is set in motion a series of devastating events that will inextricably bind together the fates and fortunes of Pradelle and the two soldiers who witness his crime: Albert Maillard and Édouard Péricourt.Back in civilian life, Albert and Édouard struggle to adjust to a society whose reverence for its dead cannot quite match its resentment for those who survived. But the two soldiers conspire to enact an audacious form of revenge against the country that abandoned them to penury and despair, with a scheme to swindle the whole of France on an epic scale.Meanwhile, believing her brother killed in action, Édouard's sister Madeleine has married Pradelle, who is running a little scam of his own...Translated from the French by Frank Wynne

Perhaps this is French fiction, a different writing style, or was something lost during its being translated? Still unclear as to where the fine line between historical fact and fiction lies. Shouldn't be with this sensitive issue. The entire book was read while I still believed it to be fiction, only to find doubt being cast about historical accuracy in the epilogue.Perhaps the hardest part of this read was the heightened bathos as opposed to anticipated pathos that peace would eventually bring. As a literary piece, the quality of writing swings between polarized extremes. Initially exciting, the chapters do deal with each character and their part within the activities as events develop, but some scenes are badly constructed and shallow - the fight between Albert and Edouard being only one example of this. It took me a while to get into The Great Swindle, which is actually about 2 swindles and I suspect takes in WW1 under its title as well as it details the shoddy way those who fought in it were treated while glory-hunting officials plan expensive memorials and parades. If you've read Pierre Lemaitre's trilogy ,Alex,Irene and Camille this is a complete change of style and the result is a very entertaining book. The book begins on the Western Front where the French and German armies, both knowing that hostilities are due to cease have begun an unofficial ceasefire. This isn't to the liking of glory-hunting Lieutenant Henri d'Aulnay Pradelle , a truly Flashman-like character, who sends 2 men on a scouting mission then shoots them in the back blaming the Germans . Only one soldier has seen what happened and he investigates while the rest of his regiment launch a bloody attack on the German lines. Pradelle sees that he's been rumbled and knocks the soldier, Albert Maillard into a shell hole, leaving him for dead when a shell strike buries him. Fellow soldier Edouard Pericort stumbles across the hole and rescues Albert, but not before sustaining horrific facial injuries in the process. From then on the story is of the 2 friends and their nemesis Pradelle as their lives become intertwined after the war as Pradelle marries Edouard's beloved sister Madelaine. The plot is quite involved and stretches belief quite often but there are some great characters and Lamaitre brings post-WW1 Paris to life.A great read and I'd love to see the movie..as long as it has subtitles. This book is 459 pages, split into 42 chapters.I'd read 4 other books by this authors (in their English translations) and enjoyed them all so decided to try another. This was published in 2015 and it set in the aftermath of the First World War which is very different from the author's other books which are set in the present day. There is elements of the book that I liked. The set up is great and the idea of the "secret" shooting is fascinating but I struggled to enjoy the reading experience itself. My main problem is that the three main characters are tough to engage with. They all have major faults which is not a problem but unlikeable characters must be interesting otherwise the reader doesn't care. If you don't care what happens then the book isn't a success. The topic is so fascinating and full of potential but the author seems to slow the pace down so much that the book gets boring which is an opportunity wasted.
