Writing a nonfiction book is a wonderful project, allowing you to preserve & share the most important things you’ve ever learned. Plus, a successful book will improve your reputation, your career, your earnings, & the lives of your readers.

Up until fairly recently, it was possible to receive at least some of these benefits by writing any book, regardless of its quality. But today, a million new titles are published per year and it’s no longer enough to simply join the pile. Instead, you must create something that is able to stand out & succeed. And the most reliable path toward that goal — especially for an unproven author who lacks a pre-existing audience — is to write a book so startlingly useful that readers can’t stop talking about it.

This guide proposes a different way of planning, writing, & refining nonfiction, drawn from the hard-won lessons of product designers & entrepreneurs. Applied properly, it leads to books that can grow organically via reader recommendations for many years, without relying on either heavy marketing or a large author platform.

The preconceptions about "writing a book" are so deeply entrenched that most authors don't even ask themselves whether a better way exists. Which is crazy, because the normal approach doesn't work! For example:

These are not good results, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

By following a more modern approach, my first two books (2013 & 2019) now do more than $150k/year in royalties (and growing). You can do it too. It's not easy, but it is reliable & repeatable. And in the normally hit-driven, feast-or-famine world of writing, there's something to be said for reliability.

This isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. If you want to write a mediocre book the easy way, then you probably want to look elsewhere. But if you want to write a successful book the right way, then this guide will help.

This isn't about prose or creativity. I'm assuming that you know how to write a coherent sentence and are able to do the work. Instead, this guide is about understanding how to design, test, and refine nonfiction that succeeds as a long-lasting, high-impact, and recommendable product.

This isn't a self-publishing guide. The approach in this book applies equally well to both self-published & traditionally published authors. I won’t walk you through every tool & technicality of formatting, printing, and shipping a book. Those tasks are fiddly & tedious, but they're also low-risk and easy to research online. Instead, our focus is on creating the most useful, and most recommendable book possible.

5 review for Write Useful Books: A modern approach to designing and refining recommendable nonfiction Broché – 17 juin 2021

This book does exactly what the title promises. It is easy to read. Write Useful Books has no fluff or filler, just useful and practical information about how to write a great non-fiction book. Not only does it help an author write a useful book, it also makes me want to recommend this book. That is proof the content delivers on the promise of the subtitle.I learned a lot of new and useful tips from this book. To provide some context, I'm not a first time writer. I have published two books, including a multi-award-winning business communication book - so I feel like I have some experience and a decent idea of how to write a good book. BUT despite my previous experience, I still learned useful ideas, approaches, and tips from this book. My own writing process now includes methods from this book and I look forward to seeing the result in my next book.Summary: Rob Fitzpatrick has structured this book as an easy to follow guide for planning, testing, and writing a book that people will not only want to read, but also to recommend. If you want to give your own non-fiction book the best chance possible, buy, read, and use this book. This book blew my mind as a first-time author who's been trying to finish a book for years. There are so many actionable tips and big "a-ha" moments for the whole book-writing journey that I'll surely be coming back to the Write Useful Books several times.I've tried using beta readers to get early feedback several times for my book, but it was always a total mess. Rob provides a structured approach that he tested over his previous books, plus several insights from other successful authors.I was a beta reader for this book, and I've loved the manuscript. However, I was stunned to see that the final book is 10X better than the manuscript I read months ago, proving the power of Rob's approach. Wow! En lire plus

This book is a must-read for any nonfiction writer. It teaches a highly structured, pragmatic, and reader-centric approach to concept development, market segmentation, writing, beta-testing, editing, design, launch and marketing.I was one of the beta readers of this book and had a chance to observe Rob Fitzpatrick practice this very method. He iteratively transformed the manuscript from solid to brilliant, created a community around the book, and started marketing and selling long before the book was published. It's how modern products are developed, and now it's also how high-value books are written. This is not a long book, but it packs a lot of value. It's full of real-life examples and insider insights that are hard to come by. The casual style and examples makes it highly readable.Although I've already read it, I decided to buy the Kindle version just so I'll have easy access to the many principles, insights, frameworks, and practical tips included. It's sure to be an evergreen resource for me as a writer in years to come.If you're writing a nonfiction book or planning to, you should definitely read this one. It's likely to change a lot of things for the better in your book, as it did in mine. En lire plus

Not only does it do a great job explaining how to write a good book, it’s also an excellent example you should reverse engineer.Fitzpatrick does a great job teasing what’s coming, striking comparisons to make abstract concepts more concrete, giving an “insider’s perspective” to convey authority, pointing out where the status quo is wrong, front-loading the book with actionable advice, and using numerous other methods to suck the reader in and make them believers. Don’t just do what he says, but also what he does.Amazing work, 5/5. En lire plus
